Octagon Guest House is one of a comparatively rare type of residence built just prior to the Civil War. Known otherwise as the Stetson House, it is listed on the National Registry as a contributing building in the historic district of South Otselic. It is also listed in several publications on octagon buildings and in the website, Inventory of Octagon Houses. While the Guest House is a "work in progress," enjoy living in a quiet, historic setting with period furniture, decor and art. Avail yourself also to a large back yard and wrap-around porch.

 

South Otselic is within easy driving distance of several cities. Cortland, Norwich, Hamilton, Syracuse, Cooperstown and Binghamton are just a few. You could take day trips to a variety of places of interest such as the Finger Lakes, Wine Country or Corning. Materials and maps are available. Peruse these over a cup of coffee, with maybe a tip or two from your host. More locally, the Finger Lake Trails skirt the northern end of South Otselic which is laced with other locally known trails. There is also opportunity to hunt, fish, "go antiquing" or even to just enjoy the changing seasons in our lovely Otselic Valley. Partake in various local events such as art and music festivals. Octagon Guest House is also available for individual and small group retreats, so enjoy a quiet, restful day at the house.

 

History buffs are welcome to peruse the photographs and items displayed in the "History Hall" or acquaint themselves with the "House Genealogy" - a microcosm of small town life from its hey-day in the mid 19th century till today. Tour the real-life scenes of the Grace Brown saga, whose life and death has inspired several artistic and literary works, including Theodore Drieser's An American Tragedy.

Check-in, 3:00 to 9:00 P.M., Check-out, 11:00A.M.

 

Reservations two weeks in advance with 50 percent deposit by check (one night stays paid in full at time of reservation). Deposits must be received within ten days to secure reservations. Five days notice of cancellation is necessary to receive refund. Balance due on arrival (payable by check or cash).

 

Well behaved children welcome, leashed or crated pets welcome.

 

2009 Rates

Master bedroom: $75.00 per night, plus 8% NYS sales tax.
Smaller bedrooms: $55.00 per night, plus 8% NYS sales tax.

 

Because Octagon Guest House presently makes only one reservation at a time, the master bedroom will be filled first.

 

Discounts
-Stays of three or more nights: 10% off total price.
-All rooms engaged by a single group or family: 10% off total price.
-Only one discount available at a time. NYS sales tax added to total.

 

No credit cards accepted. Send check or money order. 24 hr. ATM available at bank.

 

Trail hikers: Pick-up and return at trail site, $5.00 per trip. A light meal will be provided at the hiker's request for $5.00 per person.
